There have been many different low carb diets on the market the last few years. The most famous is probably the Atkins diet. All of these low carb diet programs have a single common denominator and that is that they all restrict carbohydrates to a tiny 10% and even low as 5% of your total diet. This means you will replace the more common carbs in your diet with protein and fats and vegetables. Most of your calories will come from fats like dairy, nuts and meat instead of breads, cereals and pastas.
We now know that dietary fat that is found in food in it’s natural state is not necessarily turned into fat in our bodies, and in some cases is actually good fat and important for us to consume. However when you eat high carbohydrate foods you stimulate insulin production and this can lead to a set of serious health problems in many people including diabetes. Insulin will convert carbs into fat. Eating these high carbohydrate foods like pasta and bread increases the blood sugar and stimulates your pancreas to produce insulin. This can cause fat to deposit in your body and will also stimulate areas of your brain to tell you that you are now hungry so … you snack usually on cookies, or other high carb foods.
When you restrict carbs by going on a low carb diet you can effectively stop this cycle. Restricting your carbohydrate consumption will cause your insulin level to drop and your glycogen which is a hormone that causes fat to be burned and cholesterol to drop to increase in your body.
The low carb diet trend peaked around 2004-2005. Americans started waking up to the fact that it wasn’t natural fats that was causing health risks, but processed fats, and carbohydrates that had diabetes rates peaking as well.
So is a low carb diet a healthy way to lose weight? Not only have studies from the Atkins diet have shown that low carb diets have helped people lose more weight faster, but the three studies have all come to the same conclusion that the low carb weight loss program has also helped to lower cholesterol instead of making it higher with increase in fat intake.

As we just learned carbs are turned into sugar faster than proteins. Thus high protein low carb diets will have a better glycemic index.
